Divorce is stressful for all parties involved and co-parenting under a court adopted plan presents its own set of complexities. Fortunately, technology has evolved to provide assistance. There are multiple apps available online offering a range of utilities. These apps can provide objectivity and certainty in activities and decisions, helping to reduce or avoid misunderstandings that underlie many disputes and conflicts.
One of the primary functions of co-parenting apps is communication. They provide dedicated platforms for parents to exchange important information about their children instead of relying just on emails or phone calls. The platforms also keep records of communications.
As another key feature, these apps offer shared, centralized calendars that allow parents to input, track and update important dates, such as custody schedules, school events, extracurricular activities and medical appointments.
Some apps include platforms for managing child-rearing expenses, such as school fees, medical costs and extracurricular activities. Parents can monitor expenses and management payments between them.
Still another feature is document sharing, which allows for secure storage and transmission of important records and of photos and videos of memorable events. This gives both parents access to information and records without need of asking.
These are some of the more popular co-parenting apps:
OurFamilyWizard — In addition to platforms for communication, calendar sharing, expense tracking, secure messaging and documenting and tracking information, this app includes a “ToneMeter” that analyzes your messages for any words or phrases that might seem combative and allows you a chance to rephrase them.
AppClose — This app offers a shared calendar, an expense tracker and a digital check-in system to confirm the well-being of the children. You can audio or video call your co-parent using the app, which automatically documents every completed, attempted or missed call.
Cozi — This family organizing app includes a shared calendar, to-do lists and a journal that can be used for co-parenting purposes.
Onward — This app automates the tracking and sharing of expenses. You can upload receipts, enter expenses you’ve advanced and then send an invoice to your co-parent to get paid back using such apps as Venmo, PayPal or Zelle.
Some apps, like Custody X Change, even have tools to help divorcing spouses draft a parenting plan, which lays out the parameters of a custody arrangement. However, a parenting plan is a highly detailed document that is usually drafted and reviewed by the attorneys for each spouse to ensure their interests and objectives are protected.
Your choice of app will depend upon your particular situation. You should select an app that is user friendly, easy to navigate and accessible on multiple types of devices. Also make sure that the app offers strong security and privacy features. Another factor is cost. Basic functionalities are usually free, but premium features may require a subscription.
