COVID-19 has created a lot of new challenges. In some cases, those challenges have forced us to get more creative about how we connect and share with one another—which can be a great thing.
It has also made some problems a lot worse. Domestic violence is one of the many problems that has been aggravated by the coronavirus. With stay-at-home orders issued in New York, there has been a spike in domestic violence reports. To compound the problem, shelters are limiting the capacity to attempt to decrease the overall spread of the virus.
The Alarming Statistics
An article that ran in Vogue in June 2020 noted that the New York State Police saw an increase in the rate of domestic violence calls by 15% in March alone. By April and May, there was an increase in the New York State Domestic Violence hotline calls of 30%.
Large police departments outside of NYC also saw an increase of 12% of reported intimate partner violence for the first quarter of 2020, compared with the same period of 2019.
